Scale Model #33
This model was built for the Altamonte Springs Historical Society, Altamonte Springs, FL., and is the largest model created thus far. The original building was built in 1881 and was continually under construction with additions until the 1940's. The model is a replica of the hotel in 1883. This hotel was a very important landmark to the area. It was a Winter Retreat for the "Rich & Famous". Many celebrities and politicians came to enjoy the good weather, the springs and lakes that Doctors in the north were recommending to their patients. A most elegant affair was held in the honor of Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant at the hotel in March of 1883. The hotel burned to the ground in 1953, so the model was constructed entirely from pictures. Everyone, still alive, that knew what it looked like before the fire, overwhelmingly approved it. The project took approximately 650 hours to create, and is constructed primarily of bass clapboard, luan plywood, and 1/16" Plexiglas for windows. Each piece of furniture has been hand crafted from oak. The lattice construction at the base of the building is made from pieces of basswood glued individually in the criss cross design. The addition of people, horse drawn rail car, and furniture help to reproduce the quiet gentle life style that surrounded the Altamonte Hotel and it's guests. This model has proven to be very useful in drawing attention to the Historical Society and what they are trying to do in the community.
